Laleham Skiff And Rowing Club

A Memory of Laleham.

I don't have a memory of Laleham, but I would like to find out something about two of its nearby residents. Donald Jewson was president of the Laleham Skiff and Rowing club for many years until he died in 1956. Does anyone have any knowledge of him or of the Laleham Skiff and Rowing club, or of someone who might know?

The reason I am interested is that Mr Jewson bought the first MG car in 1923 and as a director of the MG car Club I am trying to research the first MG owner for the centenary of MG in 2023.

Mr Jewson was married to Yolande Jewson who, after her husband's death at the end of 1956, then moved to Fleet in Hants.

Any information very welcome.

Hi Peter,
If you are still looking to find information on Mr Jewson, I belonged to the Laleham Skiff andPunting Club from 1952, but was a bit young to remember him, although I belonged to the Club until the middle 1960s.
I will contact one of the River Rats (we have a reunion every year and will be meeting the end of this month) who also lived on Laleham Reach and belonged to the club.
You could try Penny Chuter who went on to coach the Womens Olympic Rowing Team and is almost certainly on Google, or Ray Collin, who now lives in Poole, Dorset and whilst I do not have his new address, will be on an electoral roll for recent years.
Will let you know if I find out anything,
Best Wishes,
Carol Smith-Tavinor
Hello Carol, I have spoken to Penny Chuter and she has no memory of Donald Jewson. She reasonably said that she joined the club at 11 and was not that interested in anyone who wasn't actively involved in rowing, and that she may well have attended events where he was presiding.
She mentioned a couple of names of committee members but had no contact details and thought they had in any case died.
I will see if I can contact Ray Collin.

Thank you for responding.
Best regards,
Peter Cook
