Lancaster, The Canal 1918

More about this scene
This picture of peace and tranquillity, though it was taken in 1918, could really have been taken in 1998 or even yesterday. Note the boathouse on the far bank. I wonder if these people were charged every time they used the canal, or if they paid a one-off or annual fee. In March 1895, the canal drained overnight owing to subsidence, and washed away the surface of Station Road, Hest Bank. Note the white paint on the bridge archway to make it stand out on dark winter mornings or in twilight.
