More about this scene
We are looking down Castle Hill, by the wall of Lancaster Castle. St Mary's Parade is to the left, going up to the church. The Judge's Lodgings are at the bottom of Castle Hill down the lane. It would be up this walk that the Assize Judge and his entourage would walk on Assize Court days; the judge's man would carry the black cap used for passing the sentence of death.
