More about this scene
The Royal Lancaster Infirmary is pictured in the year this building was opened by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, later to be George V and Queen Mary. Lancaster's first dispensary opened in 1781, established by Dr Campbell; there had been a small dispensary and a convalescent house in Lancaster before this. When the foundation stone of this building was laid in 1849 it was the start of Lancaster's first proper hospital. It is still there today, but is now surrounded by a mass of modern hospital buildings.
