Nostalgic memories of Lancaster's local history

Share your own memories of Lancaster and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

Many will remenber this was the area for catching roach, canal fishing. They lay on the top and sun bathed waiting for you I believe it was due to the fact that Storeys, which is the building on the right, discharged into the canal and the fish loved it. Not only roach buut nice bream, perch etc and they were large fish as food was no object. Sometimes you could not tempt them they were too full up. Regards Frank

I still see the journey from my home in Morecambe to start my senior school years. First the bus from my home on Regent Road to the Midland Hotel. Then, across to the station for the train to Green Ayre station. From there a walk past Wareing and Gillow furniture store where I had planned to buy when I grew up! Mostly I would pass by grisly Dr Ruxtons then uphill to school where I did my GCEs before moving to the new Our Lady’s High School across Skerton bridge.
My Great Great Grandmother Jane Oversby worked for a widow, Mrs Margaret Rossall, who lived at 10 Dalton Square, Lancaster. I visited Dalton Square and counted the houses from 2 - 9; then sent down the other side Numbers 11 onward. I could not find 10 Dalton Square until a local person told me that the Town Hall is not as old as it looks. It was built at the beginning of the 20th ...see more
On behalf of my wife (Kathleen, nee Bromley) I am try to trace Gillian Cowking, believed to have been born December 1941 or thereabouts. Gillian worked for a while in Budapest and then later in Paris. Contact was then lost. Any info would be gratefully received. Thank you.
When i first met my only true love i was just 13 and we were together for about 4years before she met someone else
Market Street/Square holds lots of memories. Those underground toilets, buses maneovering round to take us home to the Marsh, which when young seemed miles away. My father was born in Anchor Lane, and there used to be a brilliant sweet shop in the top corner , also the Blue Anchor Pub where my Grandad used to drink. My father talks about playing football in that Square, obviously before the toilets ...see more
Between 1948 and 1956 these buildings were used to house a children's home. My aunt, Helena Pratt, was the matron and ran this along with her husband Noel. Does anyone have memories of this?
Looking for any info on The France family who owned farms in this area; particulary Edward France born 1880.
I rember when I played in the park, there was an Observatory, or at least the buidings. The dome remained and could be turned, this was in the 50's. The Park ranger we called 'one eye'- not sure of the reason. We also used to play on the Grammar School's sports field and ride the horse that was used for pulling the roller. We used the park as an adventure playground - cowboys and indian's etc.
