Memories Of Laney Green
A Memory of Laney Green.
I was 6 months old when we (my mother, father, two brothers and three sisters) moved into one of two farm cottages in Laney Green. I lived there until 1964, when the cottages were torn down (unnecessarily so) to enable the construction of J11 of the M6. I remember being told how one night a newly constructed bridge over the motorway collapsed. I have not been able to trace any photographs of the cottages, but have many memories of the community. Our neighbours, Mr and Mrs Adams, the Dennys at the poultry farm, Aunt Mary and Uncle Ted, who used to lob Maynards Fruit Gums across the road to us (me and my twin sister) in the front garden. There were unhappy times also. My six year old brother was killed while crossing the road on his way to school, and my mother hospitalised. We, the twins, only ten months old, were split up, my twin to the Dennys and I to my Grandmother. I hope someone reads this and is reminded of the community, which seemed more like one large family.
