More about this scene
Virtually unchanged today, the Royal Oak pub (left background)is still trading. The elves on their toadstools in the foreground have disappeared - a life-saving device now stands on the spot between where the two elves once were. It seems a little odd to see a windmill so near the shore. The author and aeronautical engineer Neville Shute lived here between 1934 and 1940 when he worked at Portsmouth Airport.
