War Memorial In Leadgate

A Memory of Leadgate.

I believe my grandfather's name is on a WW1 Memorial in Leadgate and I wonder why? His name was John James Eccles and he is also remembered on a Memorial of St Patrick's Dipton. Can anyone help with this or with photographs of the memorial please?

Hi Maueen The Village are working on plans and events to mark the 100th year anniversary of the end of World War 1. Andy Plant secretary of the Area Partnership is doing some fab work on building a database of details of the men on the War Memorial. Please get in touch and hopefully we can help you, richardjudd@leadgatevillage.org.uk
St Patrick's RC Dipton was a "mission" church from Broom as at Leadgate established in 1907, and only becoming fully independent in the 1930s. Most of the Catholic war dead from Dipton in WW1 were baptised at Brooms. So all the catholic war dead from Dipton are commemorated on the Calvary at Brooms in Leadgate but not on the Leadgate Village memorial in Durham Road Leadgate
Hello Richard and Andy; many thanks for the information. I now have quite a detailed story of my grandfather's life and war years if it would be of interest to you. I don't think we have any family left in the NE now - our branch went to Coventry in the 1930s . I am really concerned that the battles in Italy will hardly feature in the 100 years commemorations. My email is maureen.havers794@internet.com if I can be of any help.
