Canning Town East London
A Memory of Ledbury.
i was born in 1932 in malmesbury rd Canning Town in a house backing on to the railway goods and shunting yards. This provoked battle between the shunting locomotive firemen and my mother drying nappies on a clothes line on the other side of a brick wall.
Our shopping was done at Rathbone street market which ment crossing Barking road via a policeman who would hold up the traffic.
The stalls and shops sold everything and at one stall you could buy a glass of Sashperella hot in winter cold in summer. At the end of the road was a council depot where 2 steam rollers stood proudly outside the garage.
My relations a large family Mc Williams lived in Percy road and like myself attended star lane school.
At the end of Star lane were Peggy leggy steps a foot bridge over the railway which provided a challenge between locomotives and pedestrians. If they got there first it was a puff of smoke through the gaps in the boards.
Pollution was bad and we moved to a new estate in welling Kent where my father insisted we took deep breaths every morning. My e mail address is email@example.com
