More about this scene

Originally a wooden Saxon fortress built on two islands, the building was transformed into a solid stone castle at the end of the 12th century by the Norman baron Robert de Crevecoeur. Over three centuries it was the dower home of eight medieval queens in succession. Henry VIII lavished substantial sums on its improvement, before it passed into the possession of the St Leger, Culpeper and Fairfax families in turn.
