Leicester, Charles Street c.1955

More about this scene
When Charles Street was widened and extended, a great opportunity was lost to introduce buildings and shopping of quality. Instead, as seen in this photograph, which records the new extension northwards from Humberstone Gate, the buildings are modest, almost retiring, while the Council's attention to streetscape amounts to a concrete flower trough. Lea's Clock was always a useful reference as a meeting place.
