Leicester, The Clock Tower And Gallowtree Gate c.1965

More about this scene
Looking southwards from the Haymarket into Gallowtree Gate: it is the building immediately to the left of the Clock Tower which is of interest. A quite spectacular new front of 1894 was added to an older building, recording that from these offices Mr Thomas Cook arranged the world's first cheap day rail excursion (to Loughborough) in 1841, and went on to provide affordable travel for ordinary people, both at home and on the continent. He died in 1892, a stalwart of the Temperance Movement, but at the same time a man who has given much pleasure to the world.
