Castle Yard c1965. The Great Hall, built by Robert, Earl of Leicester around 1150, cannot compare with that of Oakham Castle of c1180, some twenty miles east of the city, as an example of Norman architecture; but as part of the extensive remains of Leicester Castle and its town defences, it is quite remarkable. Although the building has been pared down from its original aisled form, and has been provided with what is basically a 17th- century range and brick front, enough original fabric remains to render the structure important in a European context. Since the turn of the 14th century and extending into the 20th century, the Hall has been in court use. The photograph shows a small group of policemen, prob- ably waiting to give their evidence!
