Memories Of The Miz Maze
A Memory of Leigh.
I was talking to my mum, she was born in Leigh in 1927. Her parents had Bracken Heath, a small holding. Her mum was Dorothy Faulkner, and she was the school teacher until she retired in 1965. Anyway, my mum, Jean, recalls the maze and it's connections to ghostly carry ons. She believes that witches had been hung on a large tree at a fork in the road close by. There were many witches and it was meant to act as a deterrent. She claims that it was very spooky and she was often sent on errands to a farm where Granny Hann or Hansford lived . She would cycle up there at speed and would never stop for anything or anyone. She took me once and it was a strange, eerie place. I even remember all the ghost stories I was told and I was only 6 or 7 at the time. Were they telling me tall tales or was there some truth? I'm intrigued.
