More about this scene
This photograph of the 15th-century Market Cross shows just how far the original concept of a market town has moved in the 20th century. Undoubtedly this clear space would have been filled with animal pens and farmers' stalls only 100 years earlier. Now it provides a comfortable resting place after the trek along the High Street. The old fire station on the right was once the Town Hall, which had a cloistered market area underneath it. The statue to the left of the doors is probably one of a substitute set made for the Market Cross and subsequently discarded.
