Student Camp

A Memory of Leverington.

I too, remember the student camp. I was a teenager then and used to hang around with a group of girls outside the camp, talking with the students. We always promised to stay in touch but of course, this never happened. At that time the students were mainly Turkish and Egyptian with a few others besides. I used to live very close to the camp and was always mindful that my parents were not aware of where I was as the camp was forbidden to us village girls. We always looked forward to the start of the fruit season as it meant we would be talking to very interesting people and learning much about other cultures and nationalities. All this has gone forever which, I think, is a very bad thing.

I remember the Roman Bank students very well.
Having returned to London aged 16yrs after living as an evacuee I went on holiday back to Leverington.

At the age of 17yrs my cousin, my brother and I cycled from London to Leverington and set up our tent at the end of Roman Bank close to the student camp. When the students boarded the lorry taking them to the fruit fields we piled on as well and with the money we made strawberry picking etc we bought food like meat, eggs etc which we cooked on a camp fire nearby our tent.

We got to know some students very well and used their showers and played table tennis with them inside their Camp. After two weeks my brother and cousin cycled back to London whereas I stayed in the tent.
I carried on picking fruit till the end of the picking season. I then moved to Sutton Bridge Long Sutton area and worked in Lockwoods canning factory for about a month before returning to London.
Good old days lol
