More about this scene
Unlike Hawes and Askrigg, Leyburn never became industrialised, but it did become a fashionable place to retire to, doubling its population during the early years of Victoria's reign. For some years it boasted a theatre, and the Leyburn Shawl Tea Festivals attracted thousands of visitors The building on the left is the Bolton Arms Hotel. A fine Georgian building, the hotel came complete with a Long Room where Leyburn Market Club, founded in 1832, still holds its dinners. In the market place is an iron ring said to date back to the days of bull-baiting.
