Sam Wolstenholme

A Memory of Little Lever.

On 5-6-1877 Sam Wolstenholme was born in Little Lever. Sam played local football then
In 1897 he signed for Everton. After 107 games plus three international caps for England
he moved to Blackburn in 1905,he played for four seasons. In 1908 Sam moved to
Croydon then Norwich City ,ending his career at Chester in1913.After retirement he moved to Germany as a football coach, but when the war started Sam was interned in a
camp along with three or four thousand other prisoners where he organised football
tournaments between the various nationalities. Sam died on the 20-10-1945.
Sam was and probably still is the only English international footballer to be born inLittle
Lever.Surely this deserves some sort of recognition, perhaps a blue plaque on the library
wall.
