More about this scene
Companies vied with each other for trade; some went for sheer elegance, and others offered cheap passages. The Inman Line had built its reputation on good solid safety and every home comfort. Started in 1850 by William Inman, of Liverpool, the company was sold to an American concern in 1886, so at the time of our photograph the Liverpool firm was being controlled from the other side of the Atlantic. Here we see the smoking room, the 'gentleman only' part of the accommodation for the 540 first-class passengers, or maybe the 200 second-class passengers - I doubt if the 1,000 steerage (cheap) passengers saw this room.
