More about this scene
The junction of Castle Street and Water Street, outside the Town Hall, has always been one of the busiest in Liverpool, and a natural meeting place. The balcony within the portico has seen some of the city's most memorable moments. Liverpool Football Club and Bill Shankley (and Everton as well in the 1930s) have waved to the crowds from here. The Beatles stood there in the late 1960s on their last combined visit to Liverpool - there was a crowd of a hundred thousand in Castle Street. The great names of Liverpool's history (Bessie Braddock, Lord Derby, Johnnie Walker, King Edward VII, Brian Epstein) have all acknowledged the cheers of the crowd from here. I believe that the figure on the top is Minerva, goddess of the sea and keeper of wisdom, although some say she is Britannia.
