Llansteffan, Castle 1893

More about this scene

Llanstephan is a double enclosure castle of the 12th and 13th centuries. Its defences on three sides were enhanced by natural scarping, while the fourth was given a double ditch. There is some confusion as to just how old the castle is, as references to it being burnt by Welsh raiders in 1137 might in fact relate to Castell Stephan near Lampeter.

A Selection of Memories from Llansteffan

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Llansteffan

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

Does anyone remember Coombe School? If you do can you leave a message on here. I think it is called Cheshire Homes for the Elderly. I was born in 1935 and am still trying to find things out about my past.
I was about 6 or 7 when I was first in Wales. I was put into a school in place called Llanabrie, it was called Coombe School and I think it was a ‘naughty boys’ school. It was a long time ago; I don’t think I was naughty, just not wanted. I think I was at this place till I was about 14. We used to walk to the beach, I remember it was shell beach. I was there in 1947 in that bad winter, it was so cold and all we had was shorts and a gaberdine mack. Will write more later.
