The streets of London used to be thronged with beggars, confidence tricksters and street traders. Here we see a chair mender squatting in the passage outside the kitchen of a London house. There were once 2,500 cabinet making shops in London, many employing children. When powered sawmills and mechanical production methods brought ready-made furniture onto the market, many thousands of craftsmen lost their jobs. This old man re-canes a child's chair, while the housekeeper maintains a wary eye.
