More about this scene
Perched on the summit of Ludgate Hill at almost the highest point in the city, Wren's masterpiece of St Paul's Cathedral is the pride of London. A train has just left Holborn Viaduct Station and thunders south over the bridge, steam ballooning out over the roofs. Below, traffic crawls miserably up Ludgate Hill. In wet weather the road became a quagmire and horses pulling heavy wagons slipped and slid up to St Paul's.
