More about this scene
The pillared National Gallery in Trafalgar Square opened in 1838 - the former Royal Mews site had been earmarked long before the idea of a memorial square had emerged. At first the building was long and narrow, with the additions behind added much later. Since 2003 traffic has been banned from the front, and wide steps now lead down into the square.
