In the centre of the picture is St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Royal parish church, photographed at the time when Dick Sheppard was the vicar. He had already started the church's ministry to the homeless by opening the crypt to former soldiers, and in 1924 he hosted the first broadcast service. The familiar building was designed by James Gibbs and opened in 1726.
