More about this scene
A hackney carriage and a horse-drawn cart pass under the first Waterloo Bridge. When in 1817 the bridge opened, and was named in honour of the Battle of Waterloo victory two years earlier, the Thames flowed under this first arch on the northern bank. The Victoria Embankment roadway was added in 1870.
