More about this scene
Down by the river bank, the paviours follow the line of the medieval wharf. Behind the moat are the medieval outer defences, the inner one overlooking the outer - the battlements are 19th-century. The projecting tower beyond the old cannon is St Thomas's Tower of the 1270s, which protected the river entrance, the famous Traitor's Gate. The Tower of London is probably England's most complete and historically-important castle, and fully deserves its immense popularity with tourists.
