Where London’s other bridges are dignified and utilitarian, Tower Bridge, with its ‘daring majesty’ cocks a snook at Victorian formality. Barry permitted Sir Horace Jones to encase his steel skeleton in stone until it resembled an iced cake. Mock Gothic turrets were added, a profusion of sharply arched windows and much other sham detailing. To many the stupendous structure had the look of an ornate medieval castle.
