Ludham, St Benet's Abbey 1934

More about this scene
This abbey was founded by Canute in the year 1020. The ruins make it hard to believe in its history of royal visits; on one of these, the mayor of Norwich arrived with a hundred citizens to present a petition to the king's mother in 1469. The abbot of St Bennet's had a seat in the House of Lords. The drainage mill was erected over a magnificent gateway to the abbey, which looked more like a castle than a cloister.
