More about this scene

These premises became a children's annexe to Luton & District General Hospital. Jane Creasey went there to have a squinting eye corrected in the 1950s. It has also enjoyed time as an Exodus collective with various escapist amusements!

Memories of Luton, Children's Home 1897

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. These memories are of Luton, Children's Home 1897

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I was a " Resident" here in 1955 and would like to hear from anyone else who was there at that time. My strongest memories are of grueling hard work, from daybreak to dusk, bleeding hands and sadness. I scrubbed the whole place!! If anybody knows of more information about this awful place, I would be grateful to learn more, such as who ran it, other than Bedfordshire County. I cannot recall how long I was there but I think it was at least a year. Is it still there and what is it now ???
