Originally called Dunstable Street, there is no available record of the reason for the change of name apart from the coincidence of the accession to the throne of King George V. Certainly there would have been confusion between the original title and the burgeoning Dunstable Road just visible in the photograph beyond Christ Church at the top of the hill. Upper George Street in 1950 was a street of estate agents, small speciality shops, insurance companies and the Clarence Arms - one of the town's oldest pubs. Its access value lay in the proximity to the main post office and the central police station, both of which were in walking distance via the narrow road on the left.
