During The 2 Nd W Orld War

A Memory of Lutwyche Hall.

I had just started at my boarding school The Sacred Heart Convent In Hove Brighton when the first bomb of the war fell , we were hastily evacuated to Shropshire ,the first term we shared with another school, the next term we were at Lutwyche Hall, a massive place with a farm attached . To help with war work we were sent to do some potato picking. the farm also had horses which we were allowed to ride, i remember being tossed into a large bed of nettles ,when my mount suddenly stopped!. I also a large Mulberry tree which we soon tucked into also lettuces, one day we decided to take one up to the dorm and I was chosen to hide it in my bloomers,we had not counted on there being slugs in it !! I had a very uncomfortable walk back !!. The winters were very cold ,with lots of snow, some hardy pupils always insisted on having a window open ,so it was not unusual to wake up with snow on your bed, there was no central heating of course, but always an enormous fire in the great hall , there was always a rush to get a seat inside the fire place.. There was lots of vegatables and fruit in season, one of our favourite puddings was stewed damsons and junket. Kathleen Enid Garrett
