More about this scene
One of the most memorable images in the entire Frith archive, this intimate shot of the Cobb wall was inspired by Jane Austen and Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The latter, having walked across the hills from Bridport to visit his friend Francis Turner Palgrave, asked to be taken to the most interesting place in Lyme. 'Don't talk to me of Monmouth', he snapped at Palgrave, recalling that Miss Austen had set 'Persuasion' in the town. 'Show me the steps where Louisa Musgrove fell'.
