The remarkable Miss Mary Anning brought fame to Lyme when she discovered an ichthyosaur near Charmouth in 1811. Fossil hunting remains a lucrative industry here to this day. This fossil shop, the first such outlet in the town, was demolished when the road was widened in 1913.
