More about this scene
We look north-westwards at low tide to the cuboid shape of Sundial Cottage, and Library Cottage, which incorporates exotic but re-set older lead-work from France. It takes its name from having housed a bookshop, which traded as the Marine Circulating Library in 1840. The architect and artist Arnold Mitchell retired here. He designed nearby Sundial Cottage in 1903 in Arts and Crafts style, incorporating ammonites and dinosaur parts. The thatched Madeira Cottages (centre) were built in 1818. Eminent visitors staying there included the cartoonist George Cruikshank, the author Captain Frederick Marryat, and the poet Walter de la Mare. Its four dwellings are Benwick Cottage, Harville Cottage, Madeira Cottage and Little Madeira. Next is No 6 (centre right), with balustrades, cast-iron fittings, storm protectors and honeycomb-style wall cladding of hexagonal slates.
