Dr Ken Simon

A Memory of Maidenhead.

I am wondering if anyone remembers my grandfather, Dr. Kenneth Simon, he used to have his surgery just down the road from Skindles, and amongst other guests looked after the actress Betty Davis when she stayed at the hotel. Also, my grandmother Phil Simon and my mother at one point ran the pub inside Skindles hotel back in the 1960's. The hotel was where my aunt had her wedding anniversery, it is terribly sad that it was left to become derelict and has now aparently been sold off to become homesites, the hotel held a special place in my familys history and is sorely missed.

Yes, I remember your grandfather. He was our family doctor when we first moved to Maidenhead in 1953. My father worked for Vandervell Products in their Acton factory. When the new factory opened he was moved to Maidenhead and given a flat in Lacelle gardens just over the bridge from Skindles. When we moved from there to the new Vandervell houses in Cox Green we remaind registered with your grandfather. He must have stuck a few needles in me. ( child hood innoculations)

I remember your grandfather as a dapper man with a Clark Gable moustache and that he drove a small sports car. As a young child I always remember his reassuring 'bedside' manner ( they did house calls then) and my parents were very disappointed when he left the practice. He went private I believe.

Sixty five years later and I am still with the 'same ' practice. It is currently known as Rosemeade surgery and is located in Raypark Avenue Maidenhead around the corner from Lacelle Gardens.

I'm afraid I don't remember your grandmother or mother although my father may well have done. He enjoyed a pint or two but I'm guessing he was more pub than hotel bar.

kindest regards
