More about this scene
We are looking down Oxford Street, with the market cross on the left. The tower of Tower House can be seen at the junction with Cross Hayes Lane (right). Tower House has a long and interesting history. The 19th-century tower, built by Dr Player for astronomical study, is incorporated into an older medieval house. William Stumpe, the wealthy clothier who had purchased the abbey and its monastic buildings from the Crown at the Dissolution of the Monasteries, is reputed to have entertained Henry VIII in the medieval banqueting hall, which also has a minstrels' gallery. The building was part of the poorhouse for the parish in the early 19th century. The tower was also used as an observatory during World War II by the Royal Observer Corps.
