Malmesbury, The Market Cross c.1955

More about this scene
In this later photograph, there are inevitably more cars parked around the market cross. The building with the tall chimney stacks dates from the late 19th century; it was the Maternity Hospital and nursing home until the hospital moved to Burton Hill in 1925. At a much later date, in 1997, the Abbeyfield Society took over the premises and opened Abbeyfield House, providing sheltered accommodation for the elderley.
