More about this scene
The interior of the Old Bell has some very interesting architectural features. The inn may originally have been part of the castle built in c1130 by Bishop Roger of Salisbury, although archaeological investigations have not substantiated this. The Crown gave the castle to the abbey in 1215, and by 1216 a licence was given to demolish it and allow the abbey to build on the site. In the museum is a photograph of the medieval wall paintings which are to be found in the loft of the inn on either side of the chimney breast.
