St. Gorran's School

A Memory of Manaccan.

I went to school here at this house, Machan. It was used as a school from the early fifties to the middle sixties. The house itself was built in the art deco style, possibly in the years immediately before the war, or at latest in the late forties.
Most of the students were boarders with a few day school pupils. At holiday times other youngsters came and boarded for the summer holidays.
For a time I was the oldest boy there and was rewarded with my own room, for a time at the "Lodge" and then at a self contained flat over the ten car garage.
I often wonder if there are any old students about who might remember me and those times. I have never been back since leaving, Australia being my home for the past 44 years.

I am Luke and was at St Gorrans School from 1968 to 1973 and that was long enough. I remember the German Shepard dog "Tissel", the sheep dog "Gwenneth", a tabby cat called "Strippy" and the horse called "Stormy" and Pollyanthea. Miss Charlton seemed OK but Miss Richmond was a different animal. Wendy Cooper's mother was the riding instructor and was pretty sadistic. I was pretty friendly with Maurice and Maria Valadaries. I remember the food was great but the abuse was terrible. I didn't run away or be expelled like other kids, I asked to leave and it is the only school that I asked my parents to leave because of the abuse. I remember the chores, like beating out the mats, cleaning the goats shed shed and I remember Ming the spanish goat stank. Also, things disappeared, presents meant for you were given to other children. I remember looking for the small cowie shells on the beach, which were highly treasured by the other kids. Although the School moved to Wringford, Clawsands, I left before the move, but was there during the transition period.
