More about this scene
This is the reading room of Chetham's library. The wonderful thing is that it looks exactly the same today. The long case clock was the first thing given to the college by an ex-pupil, Nicholas Clegg, who presented it to the College in 1695. He made a barometer on the front himself. This room has been a favourite of many famous people. It was in this room that Marx and Engels spent many hours philosophising on the class struggle, and discussing economic and political theories.
