More about this scene
At this time these shops would close at noon on Saturday, and Sunday opening was unheard of. Sunday was the day for window shopping, and thousands would come in from the towns around Manchester (especially from the north) and spend the day 'gawpin' in the windows of Market Street. Lancashire's rough humour, along with Lancashire's 'thrutchin' (jostling and elbowing), was rife on Market Street on Sundays and Fair Days. At times the street was so crowded that policemen had to part the crowds to get the horse-trams through. The Arndale Centre now replaces all the shops that we see in our picture, except for Rylands at the top of the street.
