More about this scene
Hansom cabs await customers. Because the square was the home of many businesses, the rank would usually be a busy place, with customers coming and going. Many businesses took lunch and closed at 12 noon till 2.30pm or even up to 4.00pm, but they did start at 7.00am and often did not close till 8.00pm or later. Our photograph is taken almost from the church door, and the area nearest the camera was once the graveyard. As you walk the area today, it is hard to imagine how many souls rest under the concrete and paving stones. Manchester's first election for MPs was held in the square, and after a day of speech-making Philips and Poulett were duly elected.
