More about this scene
This was the home of the local fishing fleet, many of whose vessels are seen moored here at low tide. During the reign of Elizabeth I this little port also maintained about twenty small sailing boats, locally called 'hoys', which carried passengers along the coast and on the Thames. From this came the nautical cry of 'ahoy'. They continued to operate into the 19th century, until ousted by the steam packet service in about 1815.
