Tin and copper were once mined hereabouts and Mary Tavy was at the heart of it. Today, it is a sleepy little village off the frantically busy main road, and seldom visited by outsiders who simply do not know it is there. This view is virtually unchanged almost a century on.

When i was 11 I started school at Tavistock, and met a lovely girl called Helen Desmond who became my best friend. Helen's family (sister Sandra and brother Jonathan) lived at the Bullers Arms and I used to stay there every weekend and during the holidays, until she had to go to a boarding school in 1973.
