King Edward V11 Grammar School

A Memory of Melton Mowbray.

How sad to see the old school now razed to the ground. I was a pupil there from 1962 to 1964 when we moved away from the area. I travelled in by bus and we disembarked in front of what was then the Sarson School. I recall our Maths teacher Miss Whitter, who was lovely, avuncular Mr Barnard who taught Biology , Mr Warburton , who strode up and down the stage in the hall at morning assembly every morning - and gentle Miss Chamberlain who was, I think, the Deputy Head Teacher . I also recall ghastly Mrs Kaye, who taught needlework amongst other things and who humiliated me in front of a classroom of other girls.
Our uniforms were grey tunics and blazers with red cardigans with white shirts and grey and red ties. We had a summer uniform of red and white checked ( not gingham ) dresses with boaters- grey berets in winter. The boys wore navy blazers and had to wear short trousers for the first two years at the school. Looking back, this was rather cruel and unnecessary.
The school had an Art block with it's own kiln for firing pottery , a special needlework section and was set in lovely grounds. Now all gone - I hope that the alternative teaching establishments now in the area are equal to the standards set by the old place. Such a great loss- more than can be appreciated .
