Norway Lodge School
A Memory of Menston.
I attended Norway Lodge School in Menston in the early 1960s. It was so called because it was built exactly like a Norwegian chalet. The younger girls were taught by Little Miss Maunder and the older girls by Big Miss Maunder. The former was short and dumpy, the latter tall and lean. We all sat at big Victorian wooden desks with lids that opened, and had to climb up to the bench seat that was integral to the desk. The younger girls sat at the front of the class the older girls at the back and the classes were held simultaneously. I was taught to write my capital letters using an exercise book in which each page was divided up into inch squares. The uniform included a red knee length coat and a grey hat with upturned brim trimmed with red ribbon. I never progressed to Big Miss Maunder's class because on reaching the age to do so my parents moved me to Menston Junior School.
