Youth Centre

A Memory of Merstham.

Oakley House, situated off Radstock Way, was used as a youth centre when I was a teenager in the 1970's. I never went there, probably because I didn't go to senior school in Merstham, but I heard all the scary stories about the house. One legend said that a teenage girl had been strangled there with a silk stocking and another said that there was a bell hanging in the attic that dripped blood on the anniversary of some dastardly deed! You can see why I wasn't all that keen to go.

I spent four years at the Merstham Youth Centre as a part time youth leader. With Bill Williamson (Skip) in charge as a full time qualified Warden, with Ted Curtis and a number of other volunteer helpers, I helped with weekend 'Outward Bound' camping and adventure sessions. I also produced a number of 'shows' in a converted stable and I was DJ for the dancing session that completed most evening programmes. Bill convinced me to become as qualified as himself and make youth work my career which I did. I retired after 45 years in youth and community work

Hi, my name is Jenny Broadhurst (nee Williamson). Bill Williamson was my father and we lived at Oakley from 1952 until my father retired somewhere around 1978/79 by which time I was overseas. I now live in New Zealand and have done since 1975 with many visits back to see family over the years. I have many memories of the old house although the bell dripping blood doesn't sound familiar. However the house was definitely haunted, it was quite a scary place to be in. I have a lot of history around this house so if anyone's interested in chatting about that then I am happy to engage. I am now 68years old and retired. My brother Howard lives in Harwich Essex and my parents ashes are both interred up in Derbyshire. My father spent much of his childhood there living with his grandparents and he and my mother are both in the same grave as them in Longford cemetery just NW of Derby. As it happens I am returning briefly in August of this year (2018) and would love to see the inside and outside of the old place if it at all possible. I vaguely remember you Rob; long time ago.
