More about this scene
In 1886 Mevagissey landed 255,000 hundredweight of fish, the greatest quantity of any port in the west. The twin harbours offered vessels safe protection from storms. The pilchards were cured locally and packed in barrels. It is said the locals hanged a monkey they mistook for a French spy during the Napoleonic wars!
