The two shops on the left were both Morley's, one a clockmaker's, the other an ironmonger's. The tree is at the east end of the churchyard. The Bell (with a flagpole on the right) has been an inn since the 1790s. Barclays Bank is now to the right of the Bell. The taller building, beyond was Bussan & Parkin, an ironmonger's, until 1968.

When I was 7-8 yrs old, my parents took me on regular visits to Barton Mills, where we had relatives. We drove from our home in Norfolk. This was in the 1960’s.
I had a great uncle there, called Ron. I don’t remember his surname but I recall that he was married to Elsie Rolfe. During those visits Elsie’s sister Dorothy would also be around (she lived in London).

I remember the old Bussen and Parkins in Mildenhall High Street burning down. I was only young then but have lived in Mildenhall most of my life. It was the night it burned down I was with my parents, coming home from visting my gran in Gazley village near Newmarket. We was just coming up to Barton Mills and we saw this red glow in the sky, so my dad, who used to like taking photos of things happening, like ...see more
I was born (1940) and raised in Mildenhall, in one of the old flint cottages in Kingsway, (now the Mildenhall Museum) almost opposite the fish and chip shop (Snushalls?) and after a couple of moves left Mildenhall in 1955 to join the RAF and travel the world. The cottage where I was born ('Fern Villa') has long since been knocked down to make a rear access to the shopping mall in the market.

During the years of 1959-1960 I worked as secretary in the Education Centre at RAF Mildenhall. One of my favourite memories of that time was having lunch at Tillys Pantry every Friday. Another secretary at the air base had just passed her driving licence exam - quite a feat for a young girl at that time as it was a thorough examination and not too many passed on the first attempt, and ...see more
